Waste composting
Around 70% of waste in Gloucestershire
is still disposed of in landfill sites and the typical refuse sack
or wheelie bin collected from households in the county contains around
10% green waste – from
gardens, tree cuttings, branches and leaves.
Composting is key to helping divert
biodegradable waste from landfill and ensuring statutory landfill reduction
targets are met by 2010. Facing a requirement to compost 56,000 tonnes
of green waste, Gloucestershire has a limited capacity for composting
kerbside-collected green waste - a simple process using the traditional
open windrows method – and
there is an urgent need for a local composting facility |
